Small classes, offering personal attention and detailed instruction.
Classes are a hybrid of 3 styles of Yoga, BKS Iyengar (which is a form of Hatha Yoga that focuses on precise alignment and holding poses), Ashtanga Vinyasa (which uses vinyasa flow to heat up the body among many other important aspects of the practice) and the teachings of Deskichar (which combines movement with breath and tailors the practice/poses for the student's individual needs and level).
Class sequences generally follow the following format:
- Beginning meditation
- Vinyasa flow using Surya Namaskaras (sun salutations) to warm up the body
- Standing poses
- Cool down and floor exercises
- Savasana
Back bends and twists are also included to create a well-rounded practice that helps to elongate the spine, take the spine in all directions, and work all muscles of the body. Props and modification (of poses) are also used to help students experience each Asana (pose) fully.
Class Types
Beginning
Designed for the beginning student introduces and teaches the following thoroughly:
- Sun Salutations
- Basic Standing Poses
- Alignment
- Breath in coordination with movement
Intermediate
Building on the foundation set in the beginning level, intermediate classes are more challenging in intensity and quantity of movement. These classes also offer exposure to more advanced poses such as back bends and inversions. Poses (Asanas) are held longer to help build strength and increase flexibility by deepening the intensity of the poses.
Yoga for Runners (Everyone Welcome)
Sequences are specifically designed to introduce Yoga to runners. A certain cardiovascular ability is assumed therefore classes involve less flow (Vinyasa) but focus more on poses that will help you in your sport.
To help in the following:
- Increase range of motion in areas that are typically underused by runners (or overused in only one direction) such as shoulders, hips and upper back.
- Increase flexibility in areas that are typically tight in runners such as hamstrings, quadriceps, shoulders and upper back.
- Strengthen areas that are typically weak in runners such as abdominals, back and arms.
- To offer runners an excellent form of cross training.
